Prescription or profit?
The relationship between pharmaceutical companies and doctors is a complex but important one. Certainly, without these drug companies, there wouldn’t be as many medicines available for people to purchase. The history of medicine is full of businesses that have invested in research and development to create better quality cures for illness.
However, major pharmaceutical companies now have thousands of sales representatives that visit doctors at their medical centers to promote their products. Their goal is to convince these doctors to prescribe the companies' drugs to their patients. Doctors are regularly offered free drug samples, expensive meals at top restaurants, tickets to musicals and even holidays. As a result, doctors may choose to recommend medicines that provide them with financial benefits, even if those drugs are not the best value for patients. In some cases, doctors may prescribe drugs that the patient doesn’t need.
The responsibility of doctors is to only recommend drugs to their patients when they need them. As a result, they need to make ethical judgements and not be influenced and pressured by the multinational companies. Medical professionals should think first of the patient’s health, and all other considerations later. At times, this relationship between sales reps and the medical world makes doctors choose between what is best for their patients and what is best for their own bank accounts.

Pharmaceutical companies provide attractive benefits to doctors who promote their drugs to their patients. As a result, doctors sometimes need to choose between recommending the most appropriate and affordable solutions, or the drugs which they can profit from personally.
