This
may
be
because
animals
help
to
relieve
stress
and
dogs
especially
can
also
encourage
exercise
and
outdoor
activity.
Dog
owners
enjoy
social
benefits
too
when
walking
their
pet
and
chatting
with
people
at
the
park.
The
findings
also
show
that
owning
a
pet
may
reduce
the
risk
of
asthma
and
allergies
in
young
children.
Pets
can
have
a
profound
effect
on
psychological
health
too.
Children
and
adolescents
with
pets
may
be
more
confident
and
responsible.
They
can
also
cope
with
stress
better
than
youngsters
without
a
pet.
However,
pet
ownership
can
raise
some
issues.
Many
owners
say
that
they
would
not
get
rid
of
their
pet
even
if
they
had
an
allergic
reaction
to
it.
Elderly
people
sometimes
avoid
medical
care
or
nursing
homes
because
they
are
worried
about
losing
their
companion.
So
while
having
a
pet
clearly
enriches
our
lives,
perhaps
it’s
possible
to
love
them
too
much.
