This new material quickly became popular and was used to make a range of products such as bottles, bags and packaging. Today, plastic is ubiquitous. The great strength of plastic is its durability. However, this quality is also a drawback. Because plastic is not biodegradable, it has become a major environmental problem . Bottles and bags litter beaches all over the world. Landfill sites are full of plastic rubbish and more is added every year. As plastic is so tough, it is extremely difficult to dispose of without causing pollution. It cannot be burnt because it emits toxic gases into the atmosphere. These harmful gases are known to cause diseases such as asthma and cancer. If plastic is dumped into the ocean, it is often eaten by fish and other marine life . These animals cannot digest the plastic and die. If humans eat this contaminated fish, they might get food poisoning. It is also very difficult to recycle plastic, as different types often need different treatments. What is the solution? Many retailers are now banning single-use items like plastic bags and straws and introducing more environmentally friendly alternatives. Consumers are also starting to slowly change their habits . By reducing and reusing, perhaps the plastic problem can be tackled. Return to Video Writing Summarise the reading text in your own words. 5 0 words maximum. However, it is also leading to serious environmental problems because it is not biodegradable. To deal with this problem, some stores are banning single-use plastics.
