Return to Video Until recently, most people didn’t think twice about grabbing a straw for their milkshake or soft drink. Despite not being biodegradable, these handy little plastic products never caused a stir before. But when footage appeared of environmentalists removing a straw from a sea turtle’s nostril, the public started to take notice. Suddenly, the straw become the new plastic bag; the enemy of the ocean, the symbol of pointless plastic consumption and waste. It didn’t take long for big companies to get the message with McDonald’s and Starbucks both announcing that they would ban straws in their stores by 2020. Not only will this improve their image as environmentally friendly businesses, but it will also stop around a billion straws from ending up in landfill or worse, in the noses of our marine life.
