Until recently, most people didn’t think twice about
grabbing a straw for their milkshake or soft drink.
not being biodegradable,
these handy little plastic products never caused a stir before. But when
footage appeared of environmentalists removing a straw from a sea turtle’s
nostril, the public started to take
. Suddenly, the straw become the new
plastic bag; the enemy of the ocean, the symbol of pointless plastic
and
waste. It didn’t take long for big companies to get the message with McDonald’s
and Starbucks both announcing that they would ban straws in their stores by
2020. Not only will this improve their image as environmentally friendly
,
but it will also stop around a billion straws from ending up in landfill or
worse, in the noses of our marine life.
