However, every two weeks, a language vanishes — one whose evolution goes back to the earliest humans. About 2,500 languages are in danger of becoming extinct, and some of them are spoken by only 30 people. By the turn of the century, experts predict that at least 50% of the world’s current spoken languages will be extinct. While some people argue that language loss is a natural process, others feel we should fight to save them. Many experts are trying to preserve these endangered languages using technology and by encouraging younger generations to speak them. There are several cultural and political reasons why linguists are trying to save languages. As communities lose their languages, they often also lose parts of their literary traditions. For example songs, folktales and poetry are not easily transferred to another language. This affects their sense of community because their values and traditions are replaced with new ones. Losing a language may also have political consequences as countries often define ethnicity in terms of language. That means that communities that lose their language may also lose their political rights as a minority. Although a great deal of linguistic heritage is in danger, revival efforts can help to save many less common languages.
