In a recent European study,
investigated how prison sentences are linked to reoffending. In addition, the study looked at how many former inmates returned to work after
their sentences. The results showed that the Norwegian prison model, with its focus on substance abuse treatment and job training, gives surprisingly good
. So, because these treatment programs work, should we send more offenders to prison? The research team suggests that perhaps a better option would be providing treatment programs and job training outside prison, in the community. This may not be
with law-abiding citizens, however, as they may prefer criminals to be behind bars.
